Circle Line Miss Liberty
Miss Liberty was purpose-built for Circle Line in 1954, a 460-ton excursion steamer and the first vessel of her type built in the United States since 1929. She had three decks and could carry up to 750 passengers, built specifically to meet growing demand for trips to the Statue of Liberty.
She began operating in 1955 out of Pier 83. Veteran captain George Clancy skippered Miss Liberty for many years, logging more than 40,000 trips between Lower Manhattan and Liberty Island over the course of his career. Despite all those trips, he reportedly never once went inside the Statue itself.
